Pushed back 11 months and has a January release date. That doesn't exactly fill one with confidence. The Rhythm Section, 2020. Directed by Reed Morano. Starring Blake Lively, Jude Law, Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Mays, Ivana Bašić, Nasser Memarzia, Max Casella, Richard Brake, Raza Jaffrey, Geoff Bell, Jade Anouka, and Tawfeek Barhom. SYNOPSIS: A woman seeks revenge against those who orchestrated a plane crash that killed her family. If at any point one character straightfaced calls the protagonist a cliché, thats as good a sign as any to do another draft. The Rhythm Section is written by Mark Burnell (adapting his own novel) yet also given a fresh female story perspective with director Reed Morano (an Emmy winner for directing episodes of The Handmaids Tale) at the helm, but unfortunately, none of them know what to do with the shining Oxford student turned grieving junkie/prostitute in the face of an unthinkable family tragedy that, three years later, meets former intelligence operatives that unearth a deeper conspiracy behind what was actually a attack, while also readying her to become an assassin of her own. Blake Lively does solid work in the role of Stephanie Patrick, but shes being asked to convey everything from survivors guilt to sexual abuse trauma to drug addiction, only for some of those traits to be immediately taken away for her to transform into a silent killer taking advantage of the skills she does have. The problem is that when its finally time for her to get into the field (at least an hour of this movie is exposition and painfully slow training lessons) she is given missions from Sterling K. Brown (another source for intel) that feels like the most basic objectives debriefing for a Hitman game, but also if the entirety of the planning and sneaking of that mission was skipped so we could watch Stephanie go right for the kill. Basically, thats another way of saying the action here lacks involvement and purpose aside from an impressive tracking shot car chase that switches between first and third-person perspectives. Also, you have real problems if I think the story of a Hitman game (its a popular franchise known for stealthy gameplay and is rarely driven by an engaging narrative) is more intriguing than the generic terrorist bombing cover-up here. Thats not to say that The Rhythm Section needs to flesh out its villains, as they are clearly senseless murderers motivated by Islamic extremism and/or money. Although, for starters, it would be wise to not make the identity of one the attackers a mystery when there are only two realistic options to choose from (I gave up hoping to be surprised halfway into the movie. No, the bigger issue is that Stephanie herself is a boring protagonist where its difficult to buy into her wanting to enter this lifestyle or becoming a self-destructive mess in the first place. The story is even worse at getting into the personal pain driving these bold life decisions. For as unnecessarily long as her field training at the hands of Jude Law goes on, it is nice that the first time Stephanie does get physical, she is still very clearly not ready for any of this, putting herself in danger and pushing herself beyond her limits in the name of vengeance. As a result, there is more urgency in danger in a few of the one-on-one fight sequences even if its obvious shes not going to die. Her lack of proper preparation and combat experience also makes the aforementioned car chase intense in addition to serving as a cinematography highlight. Blake Lively also put in some gym work so that these more physical scenes come across believable and somewhat visceral; I wish I was able to say I cared about her actual character more, but I did wince every time she unsuccessfully blocked or dodged a punch. On that note, its a shame how little action there is in The Rhythm Section. The characters and story simply arent good enough to justify saving the mild thrills until the last 45 minutes (and even then there are some serious pacing issues going from action sequence to action sequence. However, there is a worthwhile subplot to further explore in a mother who also lost someone in the terrorist attack, as it feels like Reed Morano wants to say something of substance about how men and women approach revenge from different angles. Sadly, it only gets about 10 minutes of screen time. Lastly, it needs to be briefly mentioned that The Rhythm Section is somewhat about coping with the loss of loved ones following an airborne tragedy, which could be a touchy subject for those still struggling to process the recent death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant, terrorist involvement or not. If you are sensitive to that sort of thing, its even more definitive that you should probably skip The Rhythm Section. There are some decent individual scenes but as a whole, sigh* it just never finds a graceful rhythm. A thoughtful, inciteful, hilarious, original comedian. Why is the black comedy sidekick establishment court jester Kevin Hart famous and this guy isnt. They all look kinda tragic. “The Rhythm Section” is a really strange title for a globetrotting spy thriller – it honestly sounds more like a sequel to “Whiplash” than a middling, convoluted secret agent pot-boiler – though most everything else about the fitfully intriguing Blake Lively action movie leans toward conventionality. With screenwriter Mark Burnell adapting his own novel, “Rhythm Section” (★★ out of four; rated R; in theaters nationwide Friday) mines the familiar world of female assassins out for revenge that weve seen in “La Femme Nikita” and “Peppermint. ” Lively pulls off one of her best movie roles so far – ranking up there with her surprisingly delicious shark flick “The Shallows” – and is surrounded by plenty of visual spectacle, yet is waylaid by a narrative that lacks excitement. Even the twists seem painfully ordinary. Director Reed Morano (an Emmy winner for “The Handmaids Tale”) silently shifts from Stephanies happy memories with her mom, dad and brother to her complete emotional shutdown after the tragedy. Three years later and still obsessed with the incident, Stephanie finds out from a journalist (Raza Jaffrey) that it was actually an act of terrorism. Wanting to kill everybody involved, she meets former intelligence operative Iain Boyd (Jude Law) who gives her a crash course in no-nonsense espionage training. Stephanie goes undercover, traveling from Madrid to Tangier to Marseille, and assumes the identity of an enigmatic global assassin named Petra (whos actually dead but no one ever found a body. plus gets involved with Marc Serra (Sterling K. Brown) an ex-CIA information broker. Lively is game for the role, showcasing a wide range of emotions and action-film moves, and some of the best stuff in “Rhythm Section” is the push-and-pull dynamic between Stephanie and Iain, her spycraft Mr. Miyagi. She asks how soon shell be an ace fighter, and he quips, “Your menopause will be a distant memory, ” though the learning curve does end up being rather impressive. (Unlike Law, Brown – whose mere presence often makes everything around him better – is unfortunately wasted here. As opposed to her usual red-carpet glamorous side, Lively receives a full makeunder to great effect: She doesnt overdo it with the English accent and her character isnt as hypersexualized as, say, Jennifer Lawrence in “Red Sparrow. ” From makeup to wardrobe, Stephanie looks and feels like shes beenthrough the wringer, plus utilizes an endless array of hairstyles and colors. There are quite a few frustratingly unanswered questions in this movie, none more than the origins of our heroines unbelievable wig collection. Akin to “Atomic Blonde” minus the style, the movie shies away from doing anything too nuanced or fancy, though Morano puts together a neat one-take car chase that stands out among the various set pieces. Aside from a few cool moments, “The Rhythm Section” is perfectly content marching to the beat of the same old drum.

Then how does Lynch do it. Wow this looks great and epic I can't wait to see it. The rhythm section song. LOS ANGELES. – Its a wonder that Stephanie Patrick makes it to the end of “The Rhythm Section” alive. Normal people tend not to survive the kind of sophisticated revenge mission that snaps Stephanie out of her depression and into action-hero mode in Reed Moranos dark, broody and unexpectedly human payback thriller, which stars Blake Lively as a more-motivated-than-coordinated Post Traumatic Suffering Dispenser. Lest you fear any mention of her survival constitutes a spoiler, consider this: The movie was adapted from the first of four pulpy Stephanie Patrick novels written by Mark Burnell, so of course she doesnt die. But she comes awfully close on several occasions, and her near-incompetence in the face of danger makes her relatable in ways very few cinematic assassins have ever been. Paramount is opening the movie in January, the month where Liam Neeson is typically the one to do this kind of dirty work. Lively is hardly the actors obvious substitute, though the character she plays — a rock-bottom junkie prostitute — absolutely convinces she has nothing to lose. Actually, since Burnells novel was optioned by Eon, the production company behind the James Bond franchise, some have wondered whether Stephanie Patricks supposed to be some kind of gender-flipped 007. (No, says Bond custodian Barbara Broccoli. From the very first scene, audiences should realize that theyre watching a very different type of character. In many ways, shes even less like “Atomic Blonde, ” in which Charlize Therons meticulously choreographed, unerringly lethal fighting style is fun to watch but pure fantasy. Stephanie, by contrast, panics under pressure. Shes a bad shot, and an even worse driver. In hand-to-hand combat, she gets thrown around, battered and very nearly killed. Multiple times. The movie begins in Tangiers, where Stephanie has gone to eliminate one of the men responsible for the death of her family. (They died in an airplane bombing, and given the spectacle that might have provided, its a wonder the movie doesnt start there. But then, Burnell adapted the novel himself, so he must have had his reasons. So, in the amuse bouche opener, Stephanie creeps into his home and points her gun at the back of his head. But she cant bring herself to pull the trigger. Could you? “The Rhythm Section” features lots of terse, no-nonsense dialog but some pretty corny voiceover — like the howler Livelys obliged to recite to explain the films title. Standing there in silhouette, her weapon extended, Stephanies all jitters. But thats a much more interesting way to approach her first hit anyway. The only person obliged to be a consummate professional here is Morano, a former DP who helmed the first three episodes of “The Handmaids Tale, ” effectively setting the tone for the hit Hulu series. This is her third feature, following tragedy-porn “Meadowland” and post-apocalyptic two-hander “I Think Were Alone Now, ” and the assignment puts fresh demands on its director. Pulling it off means Moranos obliged to think differently not only about action, but also about how she works with actors. This isnt an easy role, but Lively aces it. Flashing back more than half a year earlier, the film finds Stephanie looking a lot worse for wear, with scars on her wrists and tears in her eyes. To erase the pain of the plane crash that claimed her parents lives, she turns tricks for smack in a squalid London flat. Shes scraping along rock bottom when an investigative reporter named Keith Proctor (Raza Jaffrey) shows up with inside information on the accident — which wasnt an accident but an attack, he insists. According to Proctor, the authorities know who built the explosive device but have left him to walk the streets of London a free man. “Why did you come for me? ” Stephanie asks. Without missing a beat, Proctor replies, “Because youre another victim. Youre just not dead yet. ” But a couple scenes later, Proctors dead, found with his throat slit in his own apartment. His flat has been art-directed to look like a serial killers inner sanctum, and snooping around, Stephanie manages to glean enough from his files to track down his most important source, a nameless ex-CIA operative (Jude Law) with demons of his own. His damage is nothing compared with hers, however. Stephanies still addicted to drugs at this point, and Lively shows us what that looks like, twitching on top of all the trauma her character is already carrying. The psychology of how this once-promising college grad would transform herself first into such a trainwreck — all bruises and track marks, spiky hair and smoky eyes — and from there into an avenging badass is shaky, but Livelys commitment sells it. Stephanie assumes the identity of a ruthless hitwoman, Petra Reuter (an excuse for wig changes and an attitude makeover) and reaches out to an information trafficker named Marc Serra (Sterling K. Brown) to identify the target we saw her about to eliminate in the opening scene. On paper, the rest of the film seems fairly routine: a series of setpieces against a revolving backdrop of glamorous international locations. Weve seen it in movies like “Atomic Blonde, ” “Red Sparrow” and “La Femme Nikita. ” Those women are all sexy, self-confident killing machines. But what sets “The Rhythm Section” apart is the simple matter of identification. Shes not a natural. She freezes up, and cant do what she was trained for. Instead of fighting, she flails wildly, hoping one of her kicks connects with her adversarys crotch. When she gets hit, it looks like it hurts. And when her gun falls into the bad guys hands, she may as well be dead meat. In the end, its luck, not skill that keeps her alive. Thats how most of us would be in her situation. Moments later, in an impressively staged, single-take car chase, Stephanie/Petra nearly gets pushed off a cliff. And so it continues through the final showdown. Its probably for the best that most action movies dont unfold like this, where careful planning devolves to desperate innovation in the heat of the moment. But this is whats meant by “visceral, ” and it works in this context — and must be an awful lot harder to pull off, behind the camera. Morano manages, and if Stephanie Patrick ever gets another big-screen mission, itll be interesting to see what this experience has taught her.

Directed by Luc Besson. Meh. I just don't get the draw with lively - I know her brother and sister were quite famous - But I don't see the draw. Why, why, why was this not the first trailer? This establishes the setup of the plot way more effectively, looks way more exciting, says "From the director of The Handmaid's Tale" and actually tells us what 'rhythm section' is in reference to. I love how he has become much more confident on stage he has certainly grown as a performer and he's hilarious. I loved it. I watch a TON of movies and really enjoy assassin/hitman ones. Either someone hunting an assassin(The Jackal; The Day Of The Jackal; The Assignment *Aidan Quinn<-highly recommend this one) or the lead is the assassin(The American; The Professional; The Mechanic *Charles Bronson; Red Sparrow. I also really like Jude Law as an actor and was happily surprised to see him in the opening credits and doing Jude Law things in the movie. This movie had the just right amount of everything one would expect in an assassin/revenge movie for me. From training, to Jude Law doing things, to a revenge impetus, to hand to hand fights, to gun fights, to car chases, and all done well. This is one that if TV were still a thing, and it came on, I'd watch it every time... I guess now the equivalent is after scrolling through Netflix for an hour trying to decide what to watch, I would probably play this one or one of the above.

Jo allllllll day, EVERYDAY! At 35 my mother and grandmother are worried I wont ever want a husband or kids and instead want to do something beyond that. Not that a husband and kids arent important but like Jo its not all every woman who is ever born is meant to do or be a wife and/or mother. I'm still a little devastated about it, actually. I absolutely loved Saoirse's Jo. For me personally, I grew up with this version and I watch it every year at Christmas. It is pure perfection! I'll watch the new one but Winona Ryder will always be Jo in my mind. And I know this shouldn't bother me (I know Christian Bale is British and played Laurie) but none of the girls in the new one are American. I love Emma and Saoirse and I know they're both capable but I dunno...

As a movie watcher, I might be the most unbiased and least qualified to review The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. I know nothing of Studio Ghibli nor do I know anything about the film's writer and director Isao Takahata. Apparently both are juggernauts of animation and prolific artists in the medium of film. Without any knowledge of either I must solely look at the film for how it resonates with me, and in short: it is a beauty.
A bamboo farmer is harvesting his stalks when he comes across a tiny girl inside a lotus blossom within a severed bamboo stalk. He takes the little girl to his wife, who is childless, and they decide to care for the girl. Before they know it, the girl has transformed into a baby and rapidly grows into a striking young lady. Her father decides it must be the bamboo girl's fate to be a princess, which she fervently resists while simultaneously respecting his wishes. The poised and mysterious princess attracts much attention and enchants all those who hear of her. In the end, only she knows of her ultimate fate and in facing it, she faces her true being.
Unfortunately I found it extremely difficult to find the subtitled original Japanese language version of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya and could only watch the English dubbed version, though let it be known I always much prefer to watch a film in its original language. Luckily, production was able to get veteran actors for the English voiced version of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya so the film is able to stand on its own in English as well as Japanese.
Though aspects of the narrative within The Tale of the Princess of Kaguya are conventional, since its plot derives from an old Japanese folktale, the story is fantastical, emotional and enchanting and the antithesis of stale. The themes presented in the story are imaginative and engaging and the animation is complementary to the style.
I had long forgotten the days when animation was a medium to facilitate imagination, creativity and artistry – and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya revitalizes the medium for American viewers in a wonderful and masterful way.

The other shock came when rumor spread that the famed studio he was a part of, would most likely shut down…however, still continue to do small animated projects for Miyazakis Ghibli Museum, located in Tokyo. However, buried within much of the back-and-forth of the internet, was the information that Ghibli ‘s other co-founder, Isao Takahata, was releasing his first animated feature in over 14 years: The Tale of Princess Kaguya (Kaguyahime no monogatari. The film saw release in Japan during the Fall of 2013, and has just reached American shores, as of October, 2014, for a limited theatrical release. Of the directorial co-founders, Takahata is a less constant than Miyazaki. Since the founding of the studio in 1985, he has only made 5 feature films, including Kaguya. However, each time he releases a film, each one tends to be something special in its own right. Many highly praised his 1988 film Grave of the Fireflies, and one that I found myself appreciating very much, was his 1991 release, Only Yesterday (of which I discussed in one of my postings here... The story of  Princess Kaguya, is based on the 10th century Japanese folktale, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. Though often changed over the centuries, the central storyline consists of a man who finds a baby within a bamboo stalk. As he and his wife were childless, they happily welcomed the little babe into their lives. As the man cut down more bamboo trees, he found riches within them, and took this as a sign that the girl was a Princess. And thus, decided that she must be raised as one. Takahata keeps much of the tales origin woven into his own tapestry on-screen, but does add his own embellishments to the story. He develops a number of characters within the tale, as well as adds his own. Kaguya herself is a wonderful character within the film, one who seems to thrive amid the country where she is born into, as well as in the company of a gang of village children who live near her parents hut. This is highly contrasted when she is to begin her life within the confined walls of the city, as her father wishes. At first, being in this new and exciting world is fun to the Princess, but she soon longs for the tranquility she grew up in. We see her find little pockets of happiness here and there, but there are times when she seems to quietly find herself wondering about things. In a weird way, Princess Kaguya almost reminded me of another famous humble beginnings film character. I speak of course, of Charles Foster Kane, from Orson Welles Citizen Kane. I can see some possibly taking issue with Kaguyas placement in this society, but one must remember, its not a world that is being run through with modern-day popular-culture or the ‘girl-power of films like Brave or Frozen. It shows the sometimes sad realities and sometimes ridiculousness of some past traditions. There does come a moment where Kaguya balks at having her eyebrows plucked and blackening her teeth as part of a traditional dressing, but does so out of obligation to her parents. One gets the impression that she feels an obligation and a familial love towards them, but she is also wrestling with her inner emotions…and possibly, something else? With his 2000 release My Neighbors the Yamadas, Takahata sought to emulate a style similar to the comic strip the film was based on, giving that film a sketchy, watercolor feel. Kaguya almost captures the same feeling, but moreso in a historical context. Much of the style and characters take their cues from the Edo period of Japanese culture and art, though ‘simplified into a world of white backgrounds, watercolor, and pencil lines. Even still, the character of Kaguya is drawn differently from the others, looking more like a modern-day depiction of a woman than the Edo style of the 17th century. Theres a great contrast played up when she is put next to Lady Sagami, who is her tutor in how to properly be a Princess (as seen in the image below. Much like Miyazaki, Takahata seems to find a way to bring nature into his film, setting it up with a contrast at times to the modern city (of the time. Much like how the world seems to ‘breathe in natural beauty, Kaguya almost does the same. Her youth becomes one of fun memories, and her yearnings for return to that past world, keeps coming back to her, often in emotional ways that seemed to seep into the audience around me. Unlike most filmmakers, Takahata chooses a different composer for each of his films. This time, the honor falls to Jo Hisaishi, Miyazakis musical collaborator. And just as can be expected, Jo doesnt disappoint. Traditional instruments are used in a number of pieces, but much like the Princess herself, Hisashis score finds itself hitting a number of emotional areas. In one scene, he utilizes strings with a striking of the piano keys, to get down a major moment for the Princess. And in an interesting contrast, a celebration theme is almost cause for the opposite of the moment. Ive yet to hear a Hisaishi score I didnt like, and this is one that fans should pick up, if they havent yet. Watching the flow of the characters on many unfinished backgrounds, put me in mind of another release from the previous year, the French animated film, Ernest and Celestine. Both are wonderful adaptations of some interesting source material, and the simplicity of their art is the kind of thing that I could see inspiring many to pick up a pencil. heck, I kept watching the flow of Kaguyas hair, just admiring the line work. Every year, I always hope for one animated feature to rip my heart out, as well as find a film that is incredibly good, but that the general public will never really embrace. This year, Im surprised (and happy) to say, that both of those distinctions, are melded into The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Theres probably another 500 words I could have put down about the film, but I had to stop myself. Though Takahata has not said anything about retirement, one has to assume that given his age (79, 6 years older than Miyazaki. that this might just be his swan-song: a story from his country, brought to life in a flurry of pencil, watercolor, and emotion. The Wind Rises was moreso like Miyazaki (in the spirt of that films lead) holding his head high, and walking stoically into the sunset. With Princess Kaguya, Takahata is willing to show (or remind) us that even if he may not have had his head in the clouds like his friend, he still managed to be both grounded at times, yet emotionally appealing, in ways that not many may comprehend. One can only hope that maybe, those that are touched by his latest film, might be able to seek out his other works, and see what theyre missing. * Bloggers note: Isao Takahatas film “Only Yesterday” is not available in the United States.

We need to demand common sense legislation on the media. There was too long of a pause after first time he has talked since he was fingered LOL. What is sad, is that Richard Jewell's name does not appear on the memorial for first responders. He is given no credit. What's even more disgusting is the millions of people who think he is guilty to this day. • Great to see a film about dancing! A relatively unexplored sub-genre of documentary, and Cunningham was welcome for this alone. It adds to a hole that I suppose Wenders' Pina opened.

 

• On that note, this film should not have been shot in 3d, which added nothing but nausia. We expect the 3d was entirely for the purpose of (a) copying Pina and, relatedly, b) getting funding. But Cunningham's dances are far less spectacular and their presentation here likewise. The 3d only distracts from the movement in all but one Warhol-involved set, especially when edited with 2d archival.

 

• First half entertaining, second boring. The film progresses at a monotonous pace: one thing happens and then another and then another. No real conflict or tension.

Which is a problem. Because there evidently was plenty of this, but only in reality. The movie, on the other hand, brushes past unconvincingly. No one in the film is given space apart from Cunningham - everyone else speaks to convince the audience how great he is. I wanted to hear from one of his female dancers honestly, in long form, of the darkness of Cunningham. This would help to flesh out his character, give us something to chew on, and organise the film into a narrative. As is, we grew progressively distrusting and disengaged with the Greatest Hits/ Victory Lap tone, before the film ends suddenly with the news that all his dancers left.

Cunningham also mentioned a weapon that was capable of obliterating every major city in the Soviet Union within earshot of a Soviet soldier, causing him to report it to a comrade about what he heard (to which they disparagingly referred to Cunningham as a "tight-assed peg leg" at least one day prior. [1] Sometime after Snake's and Roy Campbell 's escape from imprisonment, Cunningham, along with Ursula and Gene, conducted an aerial search of the area aboard a Hind A gunship. Sometime later, Cunningham was tipped off by Ursula that Snake would escape with the help of his men during a rescue mission. With this knowledge, he ambushed Snake aboard his customized flying platform, and attempted to force some answers from him by using his soldiers as target practice (as well as inadvertently giving a hint at his true loyalties. Elisa, after stealing a transport truck, knocked Cunningham off of his platform, although not before he noticed her. He also ordered for the present FOX soldiers to attempt to stop the truck, although the truck ultimately escaped. Cunningham after being defeated by Naked Snake. After successfully infiltrating the silo complex, and proceeding to the launch control room aboard a cargo elevator, Snake was once again confronted by Cunningham piloting his flying platform. It was then that Cunningham revealed the truth to Snake: while he feigned loyalty to Gene, he was actually working under direct orders from the Pentagon. Cunningham fought Snake using the gatling gun, side-winder missiles and laser of his flying platform. However, Cunningham was defeated, lamenting Snake's decision to disobey his mission, as both he and Snake would have received "the highest honors a soldier could achieve" he then attempted to destroy the base with a Soviet-made Davy Crockett, intending to take Snake down with him, but his platform was badly damaged during the previous battle, causing it to explode, killing Cunningham before he could launch it. Shortly thereafter, Gene expressed pity that Cunningham had died without ever realizing that he had been used. Personality and traits Cunningham, despite his possessing an artificial leg, possessed a tremendous amount of physical strength, as evidenced by his preparing to fire the Davy Crockett by hand, as the Davy Crockett normally requires a tripod to use. During the San Hieronymo Incident, he was shown to be determined regarding finding the Legacy. However, it was implied that this was all an act. He was largely motivated by desires of revenge against the CIA in his actions due to his mistreatment under them. He also held a large degree of respect for The Boss, in large part due to her status as the Mother of Special Forces, which also acted as another factor in his desire for revenge against the CIA. He was also a decent pilot, as evidenced by his manning a Hind during the search for the then-recently escaped Naked Snake and Roy Campbell. He was also shown to be sarcastic, which was evident by his berating the present FOX soldiers at the Guest House by yelling "Don't just stand there, stop them. when Snake and his resistance were about to escape due to the timely intervention of Elisa. Despite formally acting as a member of FOX, he did not wear the FOX logo on his uniform, which could have been a hint about his true allegiance for the Pentagon. Behind the scenes Cunningham shares his name and a similar facial appearance with the Benson Cunningham character from Snatcher, although their clothing and roles are drastically different. Working with both archive footage and valuable sound recordings, she conjures up the avant-garde artist through recordings of his work, his philosophy of his art and comments by many close collaborators including notably John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg. Not meant as a biopic, film concentrates on spectacularlhy cinematic (in 3-D) new performances of many of his dances, executed by members of his company, which disbanded in 2011, after Merce's death in 2009.
At a q&a following the screening, Kovgan indicated that Wim Wenders' innovative 2011 3-D dance film about German choreographer Pina Bausch inspired her to take on this formidable project, finally starting shooting in Stuttgart in 2015 with principal photography taking place in 2018.
Her use of 3-D technique is outstanding, resulting in gripping visual images, enhanced by the accompaniment of the original dance scores by John Cage and others. For a novice like me, not overly familiar with Merce's achievements, the movie brings his dance to life and points to how 3-D technology can be used artfully rather than as a gimmick, or its current excuse to permit higher price points for movie admissions to films, both animated and action-oriented, that should play just as well if not better in 2-D on large screens.

Three proofs of residency (Mortgage Statement, Deed or lease agreement,  and one utility bill  and  one additional bill) 3. ID for identification purposes 4. Original Birth Certificate 5. Completed Florida immunization form 680 (out of state immunizations must be transferred to FL form) 6. Physical dated within a year prior to date of registration. 7. After you submit online registration, please call Mrs. Jones @ 904-547-7866 to leave a message to m ake an appointment to complete registration.
