Critics Consensus Ghoulish genre-bending asian horror boasts impressive production design, but an unsatisfactory denouement. 77% TOMATOMETER Total Count: 13 70% Audience Score User Ratings: 1, 207 Hansel & Gretel Ratings & Reviews Explanation Where to watch Movie Info Rating: NR Genre: Directed By: Written By: In Theaters: Dec 27, 2007 wide Runtime: 117 minutes Cast Critic Reviews for Hansel & Gretel Audience Reviews for Hansel & Gretel Jan 11, 2010 Young man crashes car into forest, gets rescued by three children and their doting parents and is taken to fairytale cottage in the woods. Which he doesn't seem able to leave. Part kitsch story, part scary story, and part sad story, with suitably creepy yet sweet children and yukky things happening to the adults that cross them. Nice one. Jan 02, 2010 An very unique, atmospheric, challenging, tragic and sometimes creepy psychological/drama that has drops of horror in it but not much. I thought the story was intriguing but mostly confusing and the acting and filming was mostly top notch but this one makes you use your brain to figure stuff out which was frustrating in some parts especially the ending. To me this is overrated and some people say it surpasses Pan's Labyrinth and The Orphanage but I think those two films are superior to this, not saying it's bad it's just not as good. Some parts in this film are visually amazing and it enthralls you from beginning to end but I was still a tad disappointed with the final result. Overall don't rent this thinking your going to see another korean horror movie because it is far from it but do rent it if you like fantasy, story and atmosphere driven dramas because this one is one of the more decent ones out there but be prepared to be patient for the slow build up. More of a 2. 5 out of 5 than a 3 to me. Dec 12, 2009 If you think for a second, Hansel & Gretel the Original"fairy" tale is not really friendly tale. It is creepy. A creepy version of Hansel & Gretel I thought there cannt be creepier than the tale itself. Just like I thought. Pretty well made Jul 04, 2009 The Korean horror films seem to work because of the director's ability to put elements like horror and drama in such a way that you simply cannot give up on the characters in the story, no matter how much you dislike them. This is definitely the case with Hansel & Gretel, a film which if all you know is the title and you will find something very much the opposite of your expectations when you watched the film. This is not a story about two children being taken in by a witch, but the opposite. Being despite to believe by the title that you've heard this story before and now you are going to experience a total variation from the Asian horror film. The Koreans have succeed in their need to produce something new and not fall back into recent genre trends. This film is no different. You're not entirely sure of the film, until the second plot point, you're not sure of the victims, and not if there is going to be a happy ending. There is nothing in sight. This film is like a Korean version of Pan's Labyrinth, a story about children and their strange capacity to realize their dreams through imaginations. GREAT FILM. " Hansel and Gretel " (; also known as "Hansel and Grettel", "Hansel and Grethel", or "Little Brother and Little Sister"; German: Hänsel und Gret ( h) el [a] [ˈhɛnzl̩ ʔʊnt ˈɡʁeːtl̩]) is a well-known German fairy tale recorded by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812. Hansel and Gretel are a young brother and sister kidnapped by a cannibalistic witch living in a forest in a house constructed of gingerbread, cake, confection, candy, and many other treats. The two children escape with their lives by outwitting her. The tale has been adapted to various media, most notably the opera Hänsel und Gretel (1893) by Engelbert Humperdinck. "Hansel and Gretel" is classified under Class 327А of the Aarne–Thompson classification system. A similar fairytale from Hungary is called Cerceruska. Plot [ edit] The story is set in medieval Germany. Hansel and Gretel are the children of a poor woodcutter. When a famine settles over the land, the woodcutter's wife (stepmother to Hansel and Gretel) decides to take the children into the woods and leave them there to fend for themselves so she and her husband will not starve to death. The woodcutter opposes the plan but finally reluctantly submits to his wife's scheme, unaware that Hansel and Gretel have overheard them. After the parents have gone to bed, Hansel sneaks out of the house and gathers as many white pebbles as he can, then returns to his room, reassuring Gretel that God will not forsake them. The next day, the family walks deep into the woods and Hansel lays a trail of white pebbles. Their father lights a fire for them in the woods, and goes to gather more wood. After a while, the kids realize the father isn't coming back. Gretel cries, but Hansel tells her all will be fine. After nightfall, they follow his shiny pebbles back to the house, arriving by morning. Their father is overjoyed, and takes them back in as he was very upset about leaving them in the first place. After a while, famine strikes again, and the stepmother insists that they take the kids back to the forest to leave them. This time, she locks the door to their room so Hansel is unable to gather pebbles. Clever Hansel crumbles up the small piece of bread he is given by his parents, and sprinkles crumbs along their path. Unfortunately, birds eat the crumbs, and they can't find their way home. After searching for a very long time, they come upon a house in the woods made of breads, cakes, and sugar. They eat from the house, as they're very hungry. While they are eating, a witch comes out and invites them inside, offering them a meal, and pretending to be a kind and friendly old woman. After feeding them, she traps them in her house and makes them do chores each day, feeding them well in order to fatten them up for eating. One day, the witch decides it is time to eat, and has Gretel light the oven and provide water for boiling her brother. After a while, the witch asks Gretel to hop in the oven to make sure it is hot enough to bake bread. Gretel, sensing the witch's intent, pretends she does not understand what the witch means. Infuriated, the witch hops into the oven herself to demonstrate what she wants, and Gretel pushes the door closed behind her, leaving "the ungodly creature to be burned to ashes". Gretel frees Hansel from the cage and the pair discover a vase full of treasure and precious stones. Putting the jewels into their clothing, the children set off for home. They arrive home to hear that their stepmother has since died from unknown causes and their father has not had a happy day since they left their home. They live happily ever after with the witch's wealth. History and analysis [ edit] Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm heard "Hansel and Gretel" from Wilhelm's friend and future wife Dortchen Wild [1] and published it in Kinder- und Hausmärchen in 1812. [2] In the Grimms' version of the tale, the woodcutter's wife is the children's biological mother and the blame for abandoning them is shared between both her and the woodcutter. In later editions, some slight revisions were made: the wife became the children's stepmother, the woodcutter opposes her scheme to abandon the children, and religious references are made. [ citation needed] The sequence where the swan helps them across the river is also an addition to later editions. Another revision was that some versions claimed the mother died from unknown causes, left the family, or remained with the husband at the end of the story. [3] The fairy tale may have originated in the medieval period of the Great Famine (1315–1317), [4] which caused desperate people to abandon young children to fend for themselves or even resort to cannibalism. Folklorists Iona and Peter Opie indicate in The Classic Fairy Tales (1974) that "Hansel and Gretel" belongs to a group of European tales especially popular in the Baltic regions, about children outwitting ogres into whose hands they have involuntarily fallen. The tale bears resemblances to the first half of Charles Perrault 's " Hop-o'-My-Thumb " (1697) and Madame d'Aulnoy 's " Finette Cendron " (1721). In both tales, abandoned children find their way home by following a trail. In "Clever Cinders", the heroine incinerates a giant by shoving him into an oven in a manner similar to Gretel's dispatch of the witch, and a ruse involving a twig in a Swedish tale resembles Hansel's trick of the dry bone. Linguist and folklorist Edward Vajda has proposed that these stories represent the remnant of a coming-of-age rite-of-passage tale extant in Proto-Indo-European society. [5] [6] A house made of confectionery is found in a 14th-century manuscript about the Land of Cockayne. [1] The fact that the mother or stepmother dies after the children kill the witch has suggested to many commentators that the mother or stepmother and the witch are metaphorically the same woman. [7] In the Russian Vasilisa the Beautiful, the stepmother likewise sends her hated stepdaughter into the forest, to borrow a light from her sister, who turns out to be Baba Yaga, who is also a cannibalistic witch. Besides highlighting the endangerment of children (as well as their own cleverness), the tales have in common a preoccupation with food and with hurting children: the mother or stepmother wants to avoid hunger, while the witch lures children to eat her house of candy so that she can then eat them. [8] Another tale of this type is the French fairy tale The Lost Children. [9] The Brothers Grimm also identified the French Finette Cendron and Hop o' My Thumb as parallel stories. [10] Cultural significance [ edit] The fairytale enjoyed a multitude of adaptations for the stage, among them the opera Hänsel und Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck—one of today's most performed operas. [11] A contemporary reimagining of the story, Mátti Kovler 's musical fairytale Ami & Tami, was produced in Israel and the United States and subsequently released as a symphonic album. [12] [13] Elements from the story were used in the 1994 horror film Wes Craven's New Nightmare for its climax. Hansel and Gretel's trail of breadcrumbs has also inspired the name of the navigation element " breadcrumbs " that allows users to keep track of their locations within programs or documents. [14] The most recent adaption of the fairytale is Gretel & Hansel, a 2020 American dark fantasy horror film directed by Oz Perkins. Gretel & Hansel Watch. As a German the Hänsel und Gretel I heard as child, was pretty much the same as the first story, but. The stepmother hates the children and wanted to get rid of them for some time, she only uses the limited food as a reason, to get rid of them. Hänsel steels the bread, the moment he overhears the argument between his parents and wants them to starve for planning to abandon them, he plans to use the crumps to find the way home and then survive by eating there parents. (So they are not abandoned twice in the story I heard. When wandering blindly threw the forest, they meet some animals, who warn them to never follow a sweet smell, they ignore this warning. The witch let's Gretel work inside the house while Hänsel has to work outside, when the witch decides she wants to eat Hänsel she locks him into the cage, to feed him until he is fat, Gretel doesn't notice this. Also Gretel is locked in a wardrobe at night so that she can't escape while the witch is asleep. After a while the two slaves manage to speak with another, while the witch isn't watching over them. (I think she was cleaning up a mess Gretel made. While speaking Hänsel comes up with a plan to throw the witch into the oven. The witch notices their little chat and wants to grill Gretel, but Gretel manages to throw her into the oven, by the trick already explained in the video. They bake the witch and then proceed by making pie out of her, since during the hole time in captivity they were only eating candy and sweet bread (the walls of the house are made of sweet bread) and gotten sick of it. As soon as they finished eating the witch her house explodes, because the candy was only held together by her magic. They find a chest of gold under her house take it and go home. Their stepmother already starved to death, but the father managed to survive (it isn't explained how, but since it fits the theme I'm just going to assume, he ate his wife, I mean everyone else appears to be a cannibal so why shouldn't he.) and they live happily ever after. Some variations I heard included. The stepmother wanted to eat the children in order to escape starvation and their father rescued them. For some reason in this version Hänsel's plan still includes letting them both starve. They are to weak to carry the heavy chest and go home emptyhanded, in frustration, but find out that their father managed survive, who agrees to help them carry the chest, if he gets some of the money inside. Der Wind, der Wind, das himmlische Kind. is a common German saying.

Alice is always playing a creepy character 😭just like in Witcher she plays as a witch. You guys basically this little boy is the dude living in the walls. this is a prequel and basically the doll is a curse and controls the kid until it dies and grow old. and then pass on again.

Ah, childhood. Is there nothing about it that can't be twisted? Not if Gretel and Hansel, a new episodic point-and-click adventure by Mako Pudding, has anything to say about it. When she overhears their parents decide they would be better off without two additional grubby mouths to feed, it's up to Gretel and Hansel to save the day! Or, uh, Gretel anyway. Hansel is a little... thick. But who needs boys when you've got a slingshot anyway? It's more fun, and has less cooties besides! Parents be warned, this one isn't for the young'uns. For the most part, the game is controlled like your standard point-and-click. You use your mouse to interact with objects if a thought balloon appears above Gretel's head, and once you acquire the slingshot, you can fire from your endless supply of ammo by clicking on a target, holding briefly, and then releasing. Unlike most other games in the genre, however, Gretel can be moved around the screen with either the [wasd] or [arrow] keys. The object in this first installment of a planned three part series is for Gretel to gather shiny stones to mark a path with when their parents lead them into the woods. Don't expect much help from Hansel; he's too busy eating flies. You'll need to venture outside and hunt down some suitable rocks around the house. Just remember to steer clear of bees. And giant spiders. And rabbits. And... ahhhhhh, you'll figure it out. Analysis: The author states in the game's description that it was a labour of love. And frankly, I believe them. The hand-painted visuals here combined with the storybook soundtrack make for a lush experience. Although fairly simplistic looking with their smudged bobbleheads, Gretel and the rest of the cast still manage to be surprisingly expressive, and the story is more funny than tragic like the original. Despite featuring a perplexingly out of place and mildly annoying chase/avoidance sequence at the end, Gretel and Hansel is still a pretty well polished little adventure. I do wish the adventure aspect of the game had been as tight as the rest of the design. It almost feels like the whole thing was intended originally to be an animated short, and then someone suggested they make a game out of it. While never really illogical, none of the puzzles are terribly unique either. You can find most of the ten stones you need simply by walking around behind things, and it makes the game feel a little lopsided. It's still adorable and fun to play, but it doesn't feel as fully realised as it could. The whole game is actually fairly short, and I'd be surprised to hear it ate up more than a half hour of your time. Unless, of course, it's because you were tracking down additional death scenes like the sick little bunny you are. Yes, like any good, treasured childhood fairytale, Gretel and Hansel features unpleasant things. While most of them actually take some determination (or good old fashioned tick-headedness) to see, you can still meet an untimely (and humourous) demise if you aren't careful. There's no real penalty for death, however, and you'll just restart from the point where you entered the area. Play both games in the Gretel and Hansel series: Gretel and Hansel: Part 1 Gretel and Hansel: Part 2 If you can't laugh at bad things happening to adorable little watercolour moppets, Gretel and Hansel may not be the game for you. It takes a slightly off sense of humour to take everything that happens in the game without getting riled up. (Death by bunny, anyone? ) But if you're looking for a quirky, quality treat to fill some time, Gretel will greet you with open arms and slingshot at the ready. Play Gretel and Hansel.
