😂 Longshank always felt like Shawshank to me. This was published 14 years ago Rock's new kids on the block are talking tough, Andrew Murfett reports. After the huge success of the Killers in the past year, an electrifying musical proposition emanating from New York's Lower East Side recently emerged. The Bravery brandished a 1980s-infused debut loaded with quality dance-oriented rock. But is it a case of too good to be true? In the wake of the Killers' success, eyebrows were raised in the US when the Bravery landed on the cover of Britain's excitable new-music hype-machine NME. Indeed, contrasting the Bravery's armchair ride from the British press, it's been a different story at home. Already struggling for credibility in New York's notoriously fickle club scene and the subject of some vitriolic attacks via US bloggers and web forums, it was a spiteful spray from Killers front-man Brandon Flowers that ensured the Bravery its current notoriety. In response, the Bravery's lead guitarist, Michael Zakarin, sneered: To me Brandon Flowers is a rock band coming from Vegas. He's as made-up as anyone. I've seen them live once and to me it was just so boring. But why would Flowers, leading a band at the peak of their popularity, comment on a relatively unknown band on the same label? Well, Brandon Flowers just really feels quite threatened by us. Zakarin says. "It's no coincidence that he wanted to make a strategic comment. "I think it's justified because I think he should feel threatened. More props to him for showing some sort of personality. Based on Zakarin's hyperbolic comments, it's tempting to dismiss the Bravery. If only their album wasn't so good - a brilliant pop record that mixes everything from Duran Duran and U2 to the Strokes while building on the Killers' excellent use of synthesisers. In short, it's an overtly retro-sounding album. It's bewildering, then, to hear Zakarin challenge this contention. "We're not retro at all, we have no intention of being retro. Everything you do, you're taking from the past, but we hope to be forward looking but using the best elements and creating our own stuff. After British DJ Steve Lowe downloaded several of the Bravery's tracks from a "shitty website" the band had set up, the band headed to Britain where they would tour for five weeks at a time on a punishing schedule. "Well, we were never going to do this half-ass. Zakarin contends. Their tenacity in Britain has paid off with a top-10 debut. At home in the US and in Australia it is a different story, with openings at number 86 and 100 respectively. "We wanna play to whoever will listen to us - wherever that may be. Zakarin says. "I mean, we went to England. We didn't go there and play two shows, we went there for five weeks at a time and played every night. People could never say they missed us. The Bravery's self-titled album is out now through Island/Universal. Most Viewed in Culture Loading.

Didn't work. Couldn't get mobile data working on any distro either (though it did register bars and show my carrier) but that could perhaps be related to the issue i was having with browsing the web and connecting to wifi on numerous distros? And SMS wasn't working because spacebar wouldn't let me create a text. Now wifi did work in Ubuntu Touch and Lune OS, however Ubuntu touch had artifacting and was slow compared to my Nexus 5 running it, and LuneOS has crashed a couple times already when doing things such as watching video or enabling bluetooth (And when it crashes the whole screen just goes blank. Also luneOS didn't appear to output audio when i was watching that video, but i think I'll tinker with that later. In postmarketOS wifi worked as well, however connecting to websites was impossible because angelfish just kept loading and loading duckduckgo after starting it, and falkon not only showed some weird display flickering but also certain elements of the UI kept flashing and disappearing/reappearing. And i had the same issue as all the others with cellular data appearing to not work. Though perhaps there's just some more steps to it besides starting ofonoctl and getting online *shrug* Maemo Leste doesn't work on Braveheart yet because they made the builds for dontbeevil devkits, which are wired up differently, so the display didn't work on my Braveheart and my flashlight acted as a status indicator which flashed constantly. Manjaro didn't work well at all functionality wise and wifi wise, because the touch-friendly UI options in konsole aren't there in their build, and wifi wouldn't work at all even after disabling the recommended services and rebooting. And because i couldn't get on the wifi i wasn't able to install ofonoctl and test things out, so i don't know if data/sms works on there or not. Not related to the software: I found annoyingly that the battery is very tightly fitted, so i almost couldn't get it out. I had to unscrew the midframe and pop it off in order to get the battery out. So now i always make sure to have a piece of plastic underneath the battery as a pull tab. My headphones also didn't work fully in the postmarketOS factory test image, with only the right side outputting audio saying "left side" however that could just be a software thing because i was told by Martijn that the audio is mono and only plays one clip. I'll have to investigate that once i can get web working and get online, or transfer some audio files over for testing. I'll make a post with more detail tomorrow.

See more » Quotes [ first lines] Narrator: I shall tell you of William Wallace. Historians from England will say I am a liar, but history is written by those who have hanged heroes. The king of Scotland had died without a son, and the king of England, a cruel pagan known as Edward the Longshanks, claimed the throne of Scotland for himself. Scotland's nobles fought him, and fought each other, over the crown. So Longshanks invited them to talks of truce - no weapons, one page only. Among the farmers of that shire was Malcolm... When Cheltam gets ready to lead the English charge at the Battle of Stirling, Lord Talmidge yells to Cheltem, What are you waiting for? Lead them. Before the Battle of York, Wallace tells his men that they will be more merciful than the English. They will spare the Women and the Children. To all Mercy! Wallace talks at the campfire about how the graves of his father and brother were desecrated by the English. After the scene of Wallace in the Grove, Murron is captured and is sitting inside the Lord's keep and he is talking with her. He says to her, What's your name girl? To think on top of raping and murdering innocent Scots women and children, the English also outlawed the kilt and bagpipes and Gaelic speakers did not go unpunished, thats a bit more than just subjugation and even now still centuries later the English still call the shots and looks like we are about to have Boris Johnson as PM. a man who made disastrous decisions and squandered millions in public funds as Mayor of London and who sees leaving the EU without a deal as a big success, never mind about national security which will be jeopardized as well as the Tories having a free hand to trample on workers rights, pay and conditions and a steep decline of quality on goods imported and also the higher tariffs should that happen. This was published 3 years ago A judge's decision to suspend a two-year jail sentence for a man who ignored the plight of a toddler who died a "lonely, painful death" seems manifestly unjust, according to Bravehearts' research director Carol Ronken. Bravehearts has written to Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath asking her to appeal the sentence given last week to Christopher Arthur Neville Kent, 47, for the manslaughter of Kyhesha-Lee Joughin. Toddler Kyhesha-Lee Joughin. Credit: Facebook Kent pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday after already serving 19 months in custody. On Saturday, a spokesman for the attorney-general said the minister was not considering an appeal at this stage because of on-going matters in relation to the case. Ms Ronken, a criminologist, said the sentence sent the wrong message to potential child abusers. "We need to get a message through to our courts that this type of abuse must be punished and we all have a responsibility to protect children. Ms Ronken said. She said the sentence handed down by Justice Glenn Martin was an abomination, firstly because it was only two years, and secondly because it was suspended on the grounds that Kent had already served his time. Though Kent did not either sexually or physically assault the toddler, who was aged 3 when she died, Kent did nothing to stop the horrific abuse by her father, she said. Crown prosecutor Todd Fuller told the court that the toddler had suffered a traumatic death that could have been avoided as her injuries were treatable. Mr Fuller said there were blood stains throughout the unit and a strong urine smell in Kyhesha-Lee's bedroom, where a rope was put on the door to keep her inside. Mr Fuller said an autopsy showed she likely died from sepsis caused by a perforated bowel. Ms Ronken said two years jail did not reflect the value of a child's life or what that little child suffered while Kent stood by and ignored her plight. "It just seems incomprehensible that anyone with any compassion for another human being, let alone a child, could just stand by and do nothing. Ms Ronken said. "A two-year suspended sentence is just not adequate, as adults we all have a responsibility to keep children safe. Most Viewed in National Loading.

We both agreed that it was the most enthralling movie we had ever witnessed. We are also of Scottish decent. Mel Gibson really put everything he had into this movie. It is definitely his best work ever! The young actor who played young William Wallace was excellent in this movie. Also the actor who played Longshenks was as evil a character as humanly possuible. The actor who played Hamish is a very good character actor. The young lady who played William Wallace's wife did an excellent job in making both of us cry.

Just the trailer is epic! What a wonderful movie. Alongside with Gladiator Braveheart was an introduction to manhood for me. A boy needs his heroes! And I dont care about historical correctness, even being a huge historyfan myself. Just as those brave young men serving Scotland, I am going back in the service of my country, and every time im down or when the big evil world attacks, I always think of that little outnumbred rebelarmy of brave scots who stood up against tyranny and told their enemy-they can take our lives but they never take OUR FREEDOM.
Best film ever.
Clint Eastwood needs to take lessons from Mel Gibson who did a great job with this semi-epic rumble. Braveheart is a movie that is filled with great emotion. In fact I find it difficult to believe a person could watch this movie and not feel anything for the main character William Wallace. Sure the plot is your basic revenge for love destroyed good guy bad villain standard but that is not what makes this movie tick. Great landscapes, score driven, and violently picturesque battles and added with a touch of romance make Braveheart scream down the film highway. And once again it is the supporting cast that I feel overshadow Gibson's performance. Especially Patrick McGoohan as the ruthless Longshanks. In my opinion this is the part that makes or breaks this movie and it definitely made it. If you are going to have a villain in a movie not only do they have to achieve that hated look their actions need to match. Longshanks behaved how like a King trying to enforce his rule should. He was smart, cunning, and rarely did he lose his temper unless it was needed. If this sounds familiar then watch the Godfather and Michael Corleone. The comparisons between their actions are very similar. Wallace's fellow Scots and soldiers were also well chosen and added characters that made Wallace even stand out more. I am impressed with the way Gibson chose his shots. From the ground shot with the sword appearing fifteen feet on the screen to the shot at the end with the cloth he understands that when there is a defining moment in the script you need to do something even more to emphasize it. Make it stand out in the audiences head. This is where Eastwood sorely lacks as a director. His films have potential to be more than he puts into them. Especially Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil that just screamed from every page of the screenplay for a director to drive it like a Ferrari on an open road. Gibson rightfully deserved the Oscar and he understands how difficult and restless the directing experience is. But he is also unwilling to take a great script and let it go to waste and for that I give him his do. Braveheart is a grand movie that will be a classic for years to come. It invokes volcanic emotions and returns to a time when men fought for love and freedom with fearless passion.
