Mohammad Ali Baig, who has received a Padma Shri for reviving Urdu theatre, took on the task of resurrecting Turram Khan’s (and playing him) last few moments with his captor, with his production 1857: Turrebaz Khan. The production premiered at the Edinburgh Festival? Fringe in August and will now be staged at the Qadir Ali Baig theatre festival in Hyderbad on November 12. You’ve been reviving slices of lost Deccan history and heritage. What led you to staging a play on an almost forgotten revolutionary, Turram Khan? Martyr Turrebaz Khan was one of the foremost freedom fighters of the country during 1857, who displayed exemplary courage and valour, and yet is unknown. Imagine a soldier taking on the regime of His Highness Nizam IV and the mighty British Empire with a group of 500 people. To create a theatre piece out of his story, and to play the fiery person tied for the entire duration of the performance onstage, with his eyes and voice telling the tale, is a challenge for an actor. Given that the play takes from the 1857 mutiny, what kind of research did this entail? Did you resort to fiction for the bits that weren’t documented? A lot of research was done by us, especially my wife Noor, on getting authentic details and facts. As very little material was available on him, except a few repeated narrations by historians, I did fictionalise it, but within the confines of authenticity that would make for compelling theatre. For me, the structure of the play is very important as rest of the elements depend on this. I based the entire play on an imaginary last hour that he had with his captor, who belonged to the same region and ideology but a different sociological-economic milieu. It created a contrast of the privileged and the deprived, the powerful and the oppressed. This could be referenced even today anywhere in the world with two people; one who caters to the establishment for his own agenda and the other whose agenda is a larger cause, benefiting the rest of his country. How was the response at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the London premiere? Overwhelming. For a play of such intensity in performance and verbosity in content, it was extremely reassuring that for the hour of its duration, people seemed to connect with the two characters almost breathlessly, and to see a large turnout for its premiere was heartwarming. Some Indians in the audience later shared how they were not aware of this part of the rebellion from the Deccan during the Sepoy Mutiny. Like Turrebaz Khan, many of your other plays have been successfully presented to foreign audiences in the past. Given their characters and storylines, do you face any challenges in achieving a universal resonance? I was born into theatre and grew up watching my father in various makeovers in green rooms, witnessed the grandeur of towering sets and the feel of crisply tailored costumes accompanied by lines of Moliere, Vijay Tendulkar, Krishan Chander and Samuel Beckett. Such a universal perspective of situations becomes an inherent part of your temperament. While my roots are Indian, particularly Hyderabadi, my work canvas is universal. What I learnt from Baba, my father late Qadir Ali Baig Saheb, is what I practise; that ‘theatre should transcend barriers; linguistic, cultural and geographical’. While the premise of these plays is heritage, the essence is contemporary, period yet timeless. Quli: Dilon ka Shahzaada in Urdu touched audiences in even non-English understanding French and European theatre festivals. Spaces moved audiences to tears and they would come backstage to say that it was their story, whether they were from America, Turkey, Bosnia, Iran, or from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore. Why did you wait that long? I was never attracted to theatre in my childhood, except that I loved designing the posters of his plays and sitting at the box office for the fragrance of freshly-printed tickets. In fact, I would be pained to see them disappearing before the third bell rang, not knowing that that was a good sign. Baba’s 20th death anniversary commemoration in 2005 was a turning point. When his associates and luminaries paid a tribute to him with moist eyes and choked voices and spoke about his work and persona, I felt ashamed that I hadn’t done anything to carry on his legacy. Until then, I was a jetsetting ad filmmaker visiting Hyderabad and accompanying my mother to the occasion. That’s how the Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation was born. I’m touched that a son’s tribute to his father became a revival movement for a city, and placed it on the global map as he had envisioned. Your productions have been staged in iconic historical monuments like the Golconda Fort, Charminar, Chowmahalla Palace and are quite elaborate in display too. Is this a challenge when you perform abroad? It certainly is a challenge because they are conceived, designed and blocked for a 60-feet proscenium opening or multi-level performing areas. My first production, Taramati - The Legend of an Artiste, had a cast of 40, including horses and camels onstage, and 150 lights atop a 250- year-old hillock monument and thus, could not be staged anywhere else, though many theatre fests wanted it. So I had to make my later productions adaptable and portable to be able to stage them at intimate spaces like NCPA, Rangashankara, and Habitat Centre. It’s a great learning when you are orchestrating skills of local technicians and stage craftsmen overseas to execute the design. It’s also thrilling when your space is the four-century-old Golconda Fort, the modern 5000-seater Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, the medieval Van Gogh Castle in Europe or the state-of-the-art Kagithane Theatre in Istanbul. Your wife, Noor Baig, is actively involved in your work, in various capacities. We met in a very dramatic situation at the Durbar Hall of Falaknuma Palace at the launch of a book on the last Nizam. A year later, we got married at the same venue. She has a natural ease with words in her writing and is an intelligent modern-day writer. As a co-writer, she brings in the element and energy of the present day. That helps in keeping me grounded in our life too. As an actress, she’s naturally talented and focused. She’s a bright addition to the family legacy of meaningful theatre. Also, her organisational skills ease up the stress while we are curating the annual Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Festival. This time, beginning August first week, his well-known play, “Quli: Dilon ka Shahzaada”, as well as his new production “1857: Turrebaz Khan” have both been invited to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2016. While “Quli” has already seen several productions across the world, “Turrebaz Khan” will be premiering at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, before travelling to London and then returning to Hyderabad. Excerpts from an interview: Tell us about your new play, “1857: Turrebaz Khan”, and its central character? Turrebaz Khan was a heroic figure in Deccan history, known for his valour and courage. There is a slang in Hyderabad folklore, a positive one — “Turram Khan”. When you call someone that, you are calling him heroic. That comes from Turrebaz Khan’s name. He was a revolutionary figure freedom fighter, who revolted against the ruling design of the 4th Nizam of Hyderabad and the British. He attacked the British residency, which now houses the women’s college in Koti in Hyderabad, to free his comrade who was detained on charges of treachery without a fair trial by the British. He was caught and detained, but even the jail he was put in couldn’t hold him. After a year, he escaped, and then was caught in the forest of an area called Toopran, near Hyderabad. The man who caught him, Qurban Ali Baig, was the talukdar there. Turrebaz Khan was kept in captivity, then shot, and then his body was hanged in the centre of the city to prevent further rebellion. That is his story. When you read about 1857, places like Delhi, Meerut, Lucknow, Jhansi and Mysore, all of them are mentioned, but Hyderabad isn’t. This is because the Nizams were allies of the British, and there was no reason to fight. But with Turrebaz Khan, there came a brief period when Hyderabad joined the struggle, the uprising. Does the play follow Turrebaz Khan’s life? No, the structure of the play is very interesting actually. It follows the last one hour of his life in captivity, and that one hour is also the duration of the play. It shows the difference between the man who has been captured, and his captor, Ali Baig. They are both sons of the same soil, are of the same colour, but they stand on opposite sides. Ali Baig has allied with the British. He is a man who is privileged in more ways than one, and he has no problem with who his allies are — Indians, British, French. His life is about his own family and prosperity. From his point of view, Turrebaz is “naïve”, and immature. For Turrebaz, Ali Baig has a self-serving agenda. How does the play deal with this clear difference between the two men? There are two people, one placating the system, another one going against it in the name of his motherland. Neither one is shown as the villain. Both are victims of their situation. The play is about discrimination and about oppression, two issues that are relevant anywhere in the world. It can be discrimination of blacks and whites, of haves and have nots, east and west. The play brings both sides of the story out by bringing out both characters. There is very interesting wordplay between the two, philosophical debates which explore different sides of the story. At one point, Ali Baig says to Turrebaz that you talk about leaving your home to fight for your motherland, but what about your own mother at home? What about your aging father, who needs you? Before you, there have been so many others who tried to revolt against the British empire, and look what happened to them. To this, Turrebaz replies that his motherland is more important to him than his mother; that if he is killed, the world will remember him. No one will remember Qurban Ali Baig. There are many such debates and wordplay between the two characters and the play is an intense drama. I’ve used live percussion— marfa, dhol, etc. — to complement the dialogues. The research must have been challenging. Do you supplement it with a lot of fiction? A lot of research went into this play. It is definitely a challenge, because you can’t fictionalise plays like these too much. You have to pay due respect and maintain sanctity, when you portray these historical figures, since there is no one around to correct the errors. Forget political correctness, you have a responsibility of not putting them in a light that is not morally and ethically right. You can’t sit in judgement. For this play, we have picked the aspects of the story that are relevant to today’s global scenario, since it has to make sense to lot of audience everywhere. My wife, Noor, who is also my co-playwright, has done most of the research, and a lot of it is also based on research by authorities who have written on Turrebaz. You spoke about the need to make your play’s relevance to audience across the world. Tell us about the responses you get from these audience? How do you see them connecting to your work? If you take “Quli”, which is the legendary love story on which Hyderabad is supposed to be founded, or “Spaces”, which is about the thought of sticking to your home and heritage, and about traditionalism versus modernism; both could be about people and lives anywhere in the world. We don’t stick to judgement; we don’t say who is right and who is wrong. Our purpose is to bring out an issue, and let the audience decide their own views. I’ve taken these plays to English, Turkish, Romanian, Bosnian, Iranian, American audiences, to name a few. “Spaces” moves them to tears; many of them come backstage to me and tell me that this is their story. “Quli” too, sees the audience connecting to it. When they are moved, it moves me as a playwright; it shows me that the kind of theatre I believe in is working, that despite the barrier of language and context, people can connect with these plays. I hope that “1857: Turrebaz Khan” will do that same. Your productions, held in forts and ruins, are known for usually being larger than life. How difficult is it to travel with these productions? The earlier plays that I mounted were really huge and I was stuck with own vision of them, so we couldn’t travel. But since the last few plays, like “Spaces”, “Quli” and now “Turrebaz”, I’m still mounting them on a big scale, but I’ve tried to make them production sensible. I keep the portability in mind, so that now we are travelling light, but the end result is still grand. News 9. 2. 2020 Irish trad family The Maguires “blend youthful energy and musical maturity” The Maguires, a four-piece family band from Co Wicklow made up of Emma Maguire (fiddle, flute, concertina, piano), Aoife Maguire (concertina, uilleann pipes), Seán Maguire (bodhrán) and Philip Maguire (guitar), have been on the go for more than three years now impressing audiences with their unmatchable talents. In December 2016, The Maguires released their debut traditional Irish music album ‘Little Giants and Other Oxymorons. ’ On it, the band members wrote six of the eleven tracks. Although The Maguires are a traditional Irish band, they describe themselves as “a blend of youthful energy and musical maturity” taking some of their favorite traditional tunes and more modern ones and adding syncopated, infectious rhythms to the mix. The Maguires have earned themselves admirers across the globe after featuring on The Ray D’Arcy Show in Ireland to an estimated half a million viewers in May 2016: The below video was taken as The Maguires released their debut album at the Temple Bar Trad Fest.
