A family of four heads to the Alps for a skiing holiday. When dad Pete (Will Ferrell) abandons the family during a small avalanche, it’s up to mum Billie (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) to bring the fractured family back together. Nobody asked for an English-language remake of Force Majeure, the painfully well-observed 2014 comic drama from Swedish director Ruben Östlund. But if you have to remake it, you might as well lump for the kind of talent that Downhill boasts. There’s Peep Show/Succession creator Jesse Armstrong as co-writer; indie darlings Nat Faxon and Jim Rash ( The Way, Way Back) on directing duties; and comedy royalty in Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, playing a married couple on a family skiing holiday that goes spectacularly wrong. It’s an enviable roster, and while the remake never quite escapes the snowy shadow of its source, there’s still a lot to admire. For a start, it is not exactly the film you might expect from these two actors — or even from the trailers, which promised a bog-standard goofy chucklefest. The laughs, when they come, are muted, icy and deeply passive aggressive. It’s a comedy relying almost entirely on marital tension. We already knew Louis-Dreyfus was a god-level performer, but if you needed further proof, take this film. This frosty-in-every-sense environment makes very different demands of the two leads — especially Ferrell, who hasn’t been this restrained since 2006’s Stranger Than Fiction. His character, the ultimate Embarrassing Dad, is lightly clueless from the outset. It’s only when the physically harmless but emotionally catastrophic avalanche hits (much has changed in the transfer, but that moment is extremely faithful to the original) that he becomes like a cornered animal, unable to stop burrowing deeper holes for himself with terrible choices and worse lies. If he’s the childlike, emotionally idiotic almost-villain of the piece, Louis-Dreyfus’ mum is the film’s heart, a constant source of sensible pathos and relatable exasperation. Left half-traumatised by the avalanche, she puts on a brave face until the stuff left unsaid becomes too much left unsaid. Her palpable jumble of rage and sadness is heart-stoppingly well-played. It all spills out in a scene so excruciatingly awkward that your toes may fully curl back into the soles of your feet. We already knew Louis-Dreyfus was a god-level performer, but if you needed further proof, take this film. The strength of the film lies in these two central performances, and in the simple beauty of the Alps (“We’re in a stock image right now, ” observes one character). But it suffers a little outside of that core duo. The Americanisation of the story leads to some fairly cheap fish-out-of-water tourist gags. Two Eurotrash caricatures, in particular — a sexually liberated hotel rep and a hunky ski instructor — feel like they’ve skied in from a different film, given all the restraint shown elsewhere. The ending of the original film is stranger and more nuanced, too, leaving things on a bittersweet, ambiguous note. Downhill dodges that ambiguity for something more conventional. If you’re unfamiliar with the first film, though, you may find more to favour. Like a lot of remakes, Downhill doesn’t quite make the argument for its existence. But career-topping performances from Ferrell and Louis-Dreyfus and an unusually frosty comedic tone make this a mostly rewarding day on the slopes.

I attended the east coast premiere of "The Lodge" a few weeks ago and can say it will most likely be 2020's most polarizing and divisive horror release.
If you've seen Franz & Fiala's last film, Goodnight Mommy, you'll have an idea of what to expect in terms of tone and themes. The cinematography is breathtaking, and Riley Keough's performance is unbelievable. Like "Mommy" the central characters are two siblings who are up against some sort of unknown/unstable maternal presence while existing in isolation. Instead of a vast, lonely European farm, The Lodge" features exactly what the title suggests. a mountain lodge in the middle of nowhere. It's so well done that you can almost feel the icy frost in the theater as the film progresses.
Franz & Fiala take a lot of cues from Ari Aster, ESPECIALLY "Midsommar, in depicting sudden tragedy and brutal, existential grief that consistently drips off the screen. Additionally, there are underlying themes of mental illness and psychosis that are done really well and tactfully. although I might add it may not seem so at first. Sorry if that's cryptic, I just don't want to give any spoilers. The ending will knock you on your ass. I couldn't move after the screening, I was frozen for half the credit roll, and couldn't stop thinking about it for days.
I highly recommend "The Lodge" for fans of Aster's work, or if you liked "Goodnight Mommy" and want more of the same slow-burn insanity.

WHY. some HUGE spoilers are ahead though ill be as vague as i can
The Story (huge spoilers. br> its good i tell you, the simplest backstory i can give is that the main character story are similar, trying very hard to live & survive in tokyo
but there is a huge, i mean HUUGE foreshadowing early on, and somewhere in the middle, there is another foreshadowing/explanation which IMO kills the element of surprise/twist, when the characters met for the second time she didnt hide her skill, she just shows it to him & he understands because of the huge foreshadowing early on.

moving on to the next bit
because of what both of them did, some stuff happens and after she was told by another character about something then she told him that "something" is happening to her
reaching the climax of the story, he confesses to her, she ask his wish, she granted his wish but he changes his mind and blame himself for that "wish" and try to "turn things back as it were"
oh also i should mention that this movie plays a lot with morals during the climax, and its that bit which plays with your emotion
Art/Animation
its very good and there are lots of attention to detail
but still, because the setting is on a capital city, there is not much creative freedom before it doesnt look like a capital city, unlike your name, which has more freedom because countryside, and the setting/weather, i know right, very obvious) most of the time its gloomy and rainy but it fits the theme for most part of the movie (again obvious)
one thing i hate the most is the cut to black with a "long" interval, because it tends to switch a scene which is bright AF without any fading, its blinding
sound/soundtrack:
i like it, but then again its personal opinion by this point, it fits the "gloomy&rainy" style of the movie but your name OST is better & more memorable IMO, sound design in pretty much excellent as i cant really see a flaw in it, like the visuals, there are lots of attention to detail
final thoughts:
its a solid movie, the ending is pretty much a clear happy ending romance wise but a huge "ummm" for the consequences to get that happy ending and its kinda depressing but the side characters tries to convice the protagonist that "the world is a crazy place" and not their fault
i kinda like this ending, its clear, not indecisive like your name,
the shots of the city near the ending is a possible worst case scenario of what could happen if we just keep doing what we are doing and do nothing to try to change the global climate.

I would have the re-watch Your Name, but I was BLOWN AWAY when I saw it in theaters. Weathering With You, not so much. I think something that really evoked emotion in Your Name was the sound track, both the vocal and instrumental songs. Weathering With You wasn't as strong in that aspect. The whole movie carried a lot of tension with the constant rain theme... I think it was just too heavy for me. I loved the side characters in WWY, and there were moments that made the whole theater laugh. And I did cry when Hodaka was trying to climb the building to get to Hina. I'm not one to think too deeply about all the technical stuff when watching movies, I just know I liked Your Name better. It hit me harder emotionally, but Weathering With You made me think more. Ephron's dialogue represents the way people would like to be able to talk. It's witty and epigrammatic, and there are lots of lines to quote when you're telling friends about the movie. The dialogue would defeat many actors, but Crystal and Ryan help it to work; their characters seem smart and quick enough to almost be this witty. It's only occasionally that the humor is paid for at the expense of credibility - as in a hilarious but unconvincing scene where Sally sits in a crowded restaurant and demonstrates how to fake an orgasm. I laughed, but somehow I didn't think Sally, or any woman, would really do that. "When Harry Met Sally... " was directed by Rob Reiner, the onetime Meathead of "All in the Family, " whose credits now qualify him as one of Hollywood's very best directors of comedy. Reiner's films include " The Sure Thing, " "Stand by Me, " "This Is Spinal Tap! " and " The Princess Bride. " Each film is completely different from the others, and each one is successful on its own terms.
